Lake Baikal in Siberia is the largest freshwater lake in the
world, as it has 20 per cent of the world’s fresh water. It
is the deepest lake in the world as well. It is about 1,620
m deep at its deepest point, and its maximum length is
636 km. It is also one of the oldest lakes in the world. It
formed 20 25 million years ago. More than 2,000 animal
species live within or round the lake. You can also ind
the only freshwater seal species in the world there: the
Baikal seal — or nerpa, as it is also called.
