3 A few minutes later…

Ned Stacey, the guide told us not to leave the
group.
Stacey I’m just taking a photo. My dad asked
me to take a photo of the stalagmites
hanging from the ceiling.
Ned Actually, it’s the other way round.
Stacey Whatever. It’s the same thing. Ned Hey, where are the others?
Ned No, it’s not. Stalagmites rise from the Brian I hope we don’t lose our way.

Stacey Look! Lights on the ceiling!
Brian Get out of here!
Ned They’re Arachnocampa luminosa!
Brian Arachno – what?
Ned Glow worms! They attach to the
ceiling and make special nets to
catch insects.
Brian Like spiders do?
Ned Well, not exactly. If you look closely,
you’ll see something like a silk
string hanging down. The string is
sticky, so insects get stuck to it.
Stacey Ewww! That’s disgusting!
Ned It’s Mother Nature!
Brian And why do they light up?
Ned To attract insects, of course.
