B. Below is an email Emily sent to her friend Sophie.
Read it and answer the following questions.
• Why is Emily writing to Sophie?
• What is the purpose of each paragraph?

Dear Sophie,
How are you? Sorry I haven’t written for so long, but I’ve been up to my neck in exams. They didn’t go well by
the way.
As you know, I’m at a new school now but I haven’t settled in yet. When I’m sitting in class I have a hard time
paying attention to the teacher because I’m worried about what my classmates and teacher think of me. What’s
more, my classes are quite di icult, and I haven’t made any progress. As a result, I didn’t do well in my exams.
The only class I enjoy attending is French. My teacher, Mr Wilson, has been friendly and encouraging. He knows
I’m new and he tries to make me feel comfortable and welcome. My classmates are also great in that class, and
it’s great fun speaking to each other in French. During that lesson, I feel like I’m really in France!
Anyway, enough about me. What are you up to? Are your exams over? Did you do well? Make sure you write to
me and tell me all your latest news.
Well, that’s all for now. I’m going out tonight to celebrate the end of the exams, so I have to go and get ready.
