to ind a route by ship from Europe to Asia. He was helped by King
Ferdinand and Queen Isabella of Spain who gave him ships and money
for his voyage. In August 1492, he sailed across the Atlantic Ocean with
his three ships—the Pinta, the Santa Maria and the Niña. After ten weeks
at sea, he arrived on an island in the Bahamas. Columbus believed he
was in the East Indies in Asia, but he was in the Americas. He travelled
by ship to the Americas three more times during his lifetime. He went
back to Spain in November 1504 and died in May 1506.

CAPTAIN JAMES COOK (1728 - 1779)

Captain James Cook was a famous English explorer. He sailed to
the Paci ic Ocean three times between 1768 and 1779. During his uploads/2011/11/james-cook.png uploads/2011/11/james-cook.png
voyages, he explored many di ferent places such as North America, http://goldtoothpick.com/wp-content/ http://goldtoothpick.com/wp-content/
New Zealand, Australia and Tahiti. He wrote a diary about his voyages,
and made maps of the places that he visited. In 1778, during his third
voyage, he became the irst European to travel to the Hawaiian Islands.
Cook died in 1779 on the Hawaiian Islands at the age of 50.
