3 Task
Understanding and creating line graphs
A Look at the infographic. Then read the descriptions of the five different rhino populations,
and write the name of each species on the corresponding line graph. If you have any difficulties,
find the definitions of the highlighted words in a dictionary.

We thought that southern white rhinos were
extinct until 1895 when a small group of
50 100 animals were found in South Africa.
At the end of the 1960s, that number went up
to about 1,800. After strong e forts to protect
them, the number of southern white rhinos
increased, and in 2018 there was a population
of about 19,000 21,000 animals.
There were probably around 70,000 black
rhinos in Africa until the 1960s, but their
numbers dropped to less than 2,500 by 1995.
Luckily, conservation e forts worked and, in
2018, there were between 5,000 and 5,400 of
the species.
The Indian rhino, also known as the greater
one-horned rhino, was close to extinction at
th
the beginning of the 20 century, when its
population fell to fewer than 200 animals.
However, thanks to close protection from
wildlife authorities, their population rose
steadily throughout the years and stood at
3,500 in 2018.
