Plastic takes a long time to degrade (which means to disappear
completely). A plastic straw lasts for 200 years, a plastic bottle 450
ABOUT
PLASTIC 2 years and a plastic toothbrush 500 years! Amazingly, almost all
plastic that has ever been made still exists today.
The ocean has been polluted by all kinds of plastic items. In fact,
about eight million tonnes enter the ocean every year. Experts say
that by 2050, there will be more plastic in the ocean than ish.

Plastic in the ocean can break into tiny pieces called microplastics

4 4 Have you ever heard of a Seabin? It’s a rubbish bin for the sea.
It collects oil and plastic pollution in water near the coast. Some
Seabins collect about 90,000 plastic bags a year.
5 5 5 Many items are created using more than one type of plastic, and
this makes them harder to recycle. Some plastic items cannot be
recycled at all! Unfortunately, only 9% of plastic rubbish is recycled
each year around the world.
6 Scientists are trying to create new materials that are made of plants
to replace single-use plastic—that is, plastic items that are used only
once. For example, seaweed can be used to make a straw! Hopefully,
all single-use plastic will be replaced with safer materials one day.
