A Look at the picture of the paper plane and the four
titles of the paragraphs. These are the forces that are
at work when a paper plane flies. Find the definitions of
these words in a dictionary. Then listen and read.

When a paper plane moves through the heavy planes don’t travel as far.
air, it meets air resistance. Planes with
big, lat shapes at the front meet more
air resistance than planes with slim,
pointy shapes. When there is a lot of air
resistance, the plane won’t travel as far.

                     Thrust carries a paper
                     plane forwards. A paper
                     plane gets thrust from
                     you when you throw it.
                                                             Lift
Lift is the force that keeps a paper plane in the air.
It mostly comes from the air under the wings, so
bigger wings make a plane travel further and higher.

B Look at the paper plane designs below. Which plane in each pair do you think will travel further?
Which force is responsible in each case?
